Are modern weddings too extravagant?

We now live in Spain and a few months ago we received an invitation to a typical Spanish wedding. The invitation included the cost of accepting. This is normal procedure in Spain, the guests pay an equal sum each which includes everything from gifts to reception meal and drinks and the following disco. The wedding was at 8.00pm and people didn't get home until about 6.00pm the next day. Fantastic wedding with 250 quests.
