Internet Light is Red on Modem (Motorolla 1120)?

Here's the situation. My ethernet light was not on and I could not get connected to the internet. I called my dsl provider and they went through some steps (had me even reset my modem) and came to the conclusion my NIC was damaged. So I bought an external usb ethernet adaptor. I set it up and the ethernet light is now lit up. However, my internet light is still red. I called my dsl provider to help me out and they are being completely annoying and useless. They keep telling me to call their service center where I will have to pay like $139.99 for a call for they can help me 'resolve this issue'. There has to be an easier way. Does anyone know what might be the problem? I tried going to the modems default isp number in internet explorer but it always just says page not available. I have no idea what to do at this point. PLEASE HELP!
