Am I a bad student for not having a 4.0 GPA?

No, because you are thinking in terms of high school grades. A 4.0 in college is much more unusual. In the 7 years that I was chair of a department of about 650 students, I don't think we had more than one or two who graduated with a 4.0. That doesn't mean that there weren't more who had a 4.0 for a single semester, but to have a 4.0 overall is considered spectacular, not just good.
